Increased Mercury Levels in Patients with Celiac Disease following a Gluten-Free Regimen.

Celiac disease is an allergy to gluten but this may apply to anyone with a gluten-free diet.  

According to the study: Data demonstrate a fourfold increase of mercury blood levels in celiac patients following a gluten-free diet. From:

According to the WHO (

  • Exposure to mercury – even small amounts – may cause serious health problems, and is a threat to the development of the child in utero and early in life.

  • Mercury may have toxic effects on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.

  • Mercury is considered by WHO as one of the top ten chemicals or groups of chemicals of major public health concern.

My thoughts: Less gluten = less binding = decreased mercury detoxification. People following a paleo-style diet should supplement with another binder (like chlorella, clays, or similar) to avoid potential immunological and neurological effects of mercury.
